Clutch’s new album is easily their best. Blast Tyrant takes elements from all of their previous efforts to create a sound that could be from any of the albums. The free-flow love of the rock on Jam Room provides the backdrop for Neil Fallon’s seemingly stream of conscious lyrics, which to this listener harkens back Clutch’s self-titled second album. Song structure can be likened The Elephant Riders making the most of the hooks allowing for crowd pleasing sing along sections that don’t seem forced or trite. In the past Clutch held back when you needed more (“Who Want To Rock?” From Jam Room) and gave more than we could ever need (Spacegrass, live and on CD) however Blast Tyrant is succinct and rambling in all the right places.
